The North Face is said to have established the culture of down jackets in the United States. This is a 1990s reprint of the best-selling model "Sierra Parka," which laid the foundation for the down jacket culture in the 1970s. Douglas Rainsford Tompkins, who loved exploration and nature, opened "The North Face" in 1966 as a shop selling downhill skiing equipment in the North Beach district of San Francisco. Two years later, in 1968, Kenneth "Hap" Klopp took over the business and began developing his own products. After much trial and error, he completed three types of sleeping bags and a backpack with an internal frame structure. Utilizing the know-how he gained from making these sleeping bags, the brand's first outerwear, the "Sierra Parka" (later known as the "Camp Sierra" down jacket), was born. When first developed, this jacket was available in two types with different down and heat retention, the lighter type was called the "Sierra Sweater" and the more cold-weather-resistant type was called the "Sierra Parka". As the Vietnam War was coming to an end, it was developed as a jacket that was lighter than any other jacket and could be used for adventures in the deep wilderness by reusing ripstop nylon for parachutes obtained from a military supplier. Its performance was revolutionary at the time, and the creators were said to have fallen in love with the result. First appearing in the 1970 catalog, the Sierra Parka's early design featured no flaps on the front pockets and raglan sleeves. It was made from 1.9 oz ripstop nylon fabric and weighed approximately 567 grams (1 lb 4 oz). The secret behind the production at that time is that the same zipper was used for all sizes, the attention to detail was still in its infancy, such as the lack of logos on the snap buttons, and the brown was vaguely described as "earth tone" because it was difficult to achieve uniform dyeing. This gives a glimpse of the struggles and struggles before the brand matured.
