This wooden plate is made by cutting a square piece of camphor wood. It can be used outdoors, or at home as a plate to hold bread, fruit, and other items. Camphor trees have been an object of worship since ancient times, and are characterized by the camphor scent that repels pests. The climate of southern Kagoshima, where the workshop is located, is close to Southeast Asia, so there are few Japanese-style woods, but camphor trees, which grow in warm climates, are widely available and have been selected as the prefectural tree of Kagoshima Prefecture. The strong scent makes it unsuitable for cups, but it can be used to its full potential for plates, which is why this wood was chosen.
