Our primary focus was to make it as light as possible while still maintaining sufficient durability for Klattermusen fabrics, and we chose ripstop to achieve this. The front of the fabric is treated with a Skir coating (surface coating) to impart water repellency to the surface. This coating allows the water-repellent properties to remain in the fabric for longer. Also, because lightweight construction is a priority, the back is treated with a PU2 coating, providing a water resistance of 300mm. The fabric is made from 70 denier Econyl fabric. Econyl is a recycled yarn made from 50% post-consumer recycled and 50% pre-consumer recycled polyamide. Polyamide (nylon) is a synthetic fiber derived from petroleum, creating extremely strong and versatile fabrics. At Klättermusen, we use recycled polyamide from post-industrial and post-consumer sources. Post-consumer waste is our first choice, as we encourage recycling of used products. Examples of post-consumer waste used in recycled polyamide include discarded industrial fishing nets, old carpets, and stiff fibers. While recycling polyamide adds complexity to the production process, the result is a reliable, long-lasting material that is lightweight, quick-drying, and wind-resistant, saving energy and resources while utilizing what would otherwise be waste. In 2009, Klättermusen became the first outdoor company to use recycled polyamide for all of its backpacks.
