■Staff comment (SHOW-YA): Rivendell Mountain Works (RMW) is a brand founded in the United States in 1971 that has left an important mark on the history of backpacks. ■Founded: Founded in 1971 by Larry Horton in Idaho, USA (later Snoqualmie, Washington). ■Origin of the brand name: The name comes from Rivendell, the hidden village of elves that appears in JRR Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings. ■Small-scale production by artisans: From the time of our founding to the present day, we have maintained the ``cottage industry'' format, where artisans carefully sew each item one by one in multiple home workshops, rather than producing in an assembly line factory. ■Background to the revival: The brand went on hiatus in 1981, but was relaunched in 2007 by Eric Hardee in response to requests from passionate fans. ■ Representative model "Jensen Pack" This is RMW's flagship model and a masterpiece that is said to have revolutionized backpack design. Design Origin: Larry Horton produced an original design created by mountaineer Don Jensen, a member of the Harvard University Mountaineering Club in the 1960s. Pioneer of frameless construction: At the time, most large packs had aluminum frames, but the Jensen pack was a pioneer of the "soft pack" design, with no frame, stays, or padding. The pack takes shape as you fill it with your belongings, providing a snug fit that feels like it's clinging to your back. Unique U-shaped compartment: The interior is divided into left and right cylindrical compartments by a central partition (septum), creating a unique structure that allows luggage to be stored evenly on both sides. Versatility: The unrestricted design made it a huge hit with climbers and telemark skiers of the time. Even today, the brand continues to adhere to the original design and handmade manufacturing methods, and is loved by people who seek classic functional beauty.
